1st week of HHC

So, I woke up and went into the office at 11am thinking that I was just going to learn the computer system.  As soon as I walked in the door, my manager Michelle asked if I had time at 1 to go out and do an open visit so that I could keep the patient as my own.  SURE!!  We messed around on the computer for awile, which the system is super easy, again charting by exception and then headed to Allen Park.  I met my first patient and fell in love with her.  I feel like these elderly patients are going to become extra grandmas and grandpas to me.  She was super nice and we got everything done very quickly and were on our way!  The whole day I was happy because everytime I thought of Home Health Care as a student I cringed and said I would never do it.  I am so glad I gave it a shot because I love it!

The next day we met in Southgate and I followed Michelle on her first visit.  The patient was super funny and kept cracking jokes and invited me back (which I guess was a good thing because he hated the last one Michelle brought along).  The second patient was her grandma so she let me do everything.  Grandma even invited me back anytime!  Finally we went to our last patient and they had a little baby so I was in heaven.  I played with the baby and talked to the patient, and it really seemed as if she only needed us as company and no nursing care.  That is what I like about home health care.  I am not rushed to see patient after patient.  I work at my leisure and with my schedule and everything is so laid back.  I do not have to tell my patients to stop talking because I have other things to do.  I really am going to enjoy this home health care and I cannot wait to start at Henry Ford on the 22nd!

Good things come to those who wait

Well, the job hunt was frustrating but like the title says, good things come to those who wait.  I had applied to over 400 jobs since I graduated in May and only recieved a handful of interviews after the end of August.  While thinking about it, it was not a bad thing because I was able to go to Miami and meet my boyfriends family and have a much needed vacation, and go to Camp, which many of you know is what I love about August.
My first interview came in the beginning of August and it was for a residency program at Children's Hospital of Detroit.  I made it through the first round of interviews, and the lady told me I would have no problem getting hired.  Yeah, thanks for the false reassurance.  After the first interview, your file gets passed onto the unit managers and they pick who they want to interview.  Why didnt they just interview in the first place?!?  Well I was called and told since they are Magnet status they were pursuing BSN students.  Go right ahead then with those BSN grads, I am already in my RN-BSN completion program and I guess it wasnt my niche to be working there. (what I dont get is what seperates us, we learned the info and took the same NCLEX yet we only had 2 years to prepare, and they have four, seems like they have it easier)  Anyways!!!
My second interview was for a school nurse position and I was offered the position right away, it was nothing like I imagined.  Yes the pay was awesome, 26 dollars an hour to sit in a chair in case a trach falls out.  Sounds great huh? For those who cannot keep up on the floor or do not have as much energy as I do.  Not a job for a new grad who is hungry for blood and guts!
Finally we get to where I am today!  I interviewed with a home health care agency.  Halfway into nursing school many people were trying to tell me to do HHC and I said NO WAY!  The more people talked about it, the better it sounded so I said why not, if they are the only one willing to trust me then so be it, it is experience.  I loved the manager, she offered me a position right away, which she said she doesnt usually take new grads but I have some great clinical unit experience (THANK YOU MERCY). Then I got to meet the owner who is a cute lil Indian guy, who is named "Father" he is a priest or leader of some church, who is all about us being a family.  I start next week following the manager to her first visit, and then I get to complete her second and third visit.
The next day I went to interview at Henry Ford Main Oncology Department.  I fell in LOVE!  The manager was awesome, interviewed me in scrubs, flip flops, and swore and cracked jokes the whole time.  So comforting and she was a lot like me, energetic and happy.  She took me on a tour of the unit, we went back to her office and she asked if I wanted a job.  Of course I did, but she mentioned she had more interviews that day.  I told her let me know when shes completed the interviews and I would love to work there and she said well im hiring you right now, Ive only done this once before and just hired someone on the spot but I like you and you present yourself in a professional manner and got along with people I introduced you to.  CHA CHING!!!!!  Hard work pays off!
It is going to be great, I will work 3 shifts of midnights and then have 1-3 patients for one day a week visits for Home Health Care (the visits only last 45 min) on one of my days off, then I still have 3 days a week off (which you all know me, I cant be bored so ill probably pick up more HHC patients).  The benefits at Henry Ford are amazing, couldnt ask for better.
So now its time to begin adult life....career...wonderful boyfriend...great family.  I am truly blessed and have to say, "whats meant to be will always find a way."
